European Convention on Human Rights

This course will look at the process and substance of European Human Rights Law and its underlying principles. It will provide an account of the leading jurisprudence of the Strasbourg Court in key areas such as: the right to life; freedom from torture, inhuman and degrading treatment; the right to liberty; the right to fair trial, and the right to respect for private and family life.

This course aims at critically assessing the European Court of Human Rights case law and the principles that underlie its jurisprudence. The module aims to enable students to understand in detail the European system of protection of human rights. One of the main objectives of this module is to give students the opportunity to critically evaluate the core provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights as they are interpreted by the European Court of Human Rights.

    1) take-home open-book exam (essay on a given topic) – 60% of the grade

    2) participation in discussions (face to face & virtual) – 30%

    3) regular attendance – 10% of the grade
