At the University of Opole, we are always delighted to see how the Erasmus+ programme not only fosters academic and cultural exchange but also creates lifelong connections. The story of Selin and Gökhan is a beautiful reminder of how the Erasmus+ programme can bring people together in unexpected ways.
Selin and Gökhan’s journey, which started during their Erasmus+ exchange at the University of Opole in the academic year 2017-2018, is a testament to the friendships, experiences, and even love that this program can offer. Their story is not just about two students from different Turkish cities meeting abroad, it is about how the Erasmus+ programme builds bridges across borders and cultures, shaping lives in ways beyond education.
We are thrilled to share their heartwarming story with our community and celebrate the power of international exchange. May their story inspire current and future Erasmus+ students to embrace new experiences, friendships, and opportunities that may change their lives forever.
Wishing Selin and Gökhan a lifetime of happiness, and we hope to hear more stories like theirs in the future! 💙
Below, you will find their story.

Hello everyone, I am Selin. I’d like to share our love story, which began in Opole, with you. While I was studying English Language Teaching at Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Gökhan was studying English Language and Literature at Süleyman Demirel University in Isparta. Although we are both Turkish, we studied in different cities in Türkiye and had never met before. Fate brought us together at the University of Opole in Poland during the 2017–2018 academic year through the Erasmus+ programme. I never imagined I would find the love of my life there.
On the first day, as I stepped into the dormitory, Niechcic, I met our mentor, whom I still appreciate a lot, she took care of many things and helped us with whatever we needed. That same day, she took me to the room where some of Turkish friends, including Gökhan, were staying. I still vividly remember the moment I saw him for the first time. We introduced ourselves and immediately got on well with each other. During our time in Opole, we made many friends from different countries such as Spain, Greece, Italy, Ukraine, Poland, and the Czech Republic, and we became a close-knit group.
The University of Opole connected us all, and Gökhan and I found ourselves spending more time together as we discovered we shared similar interests. We often met up at the Niechcic dormitory, travelled across Europe, and created unforgettable memories together. When our Erasmus+ adventure came to an end, we returned to Türkiye together. Shortly after, we decided to start a relationship. Four years later, we got married, and now we’ve been happily married for three years. We are both English teachers living in Türkiye.
Looking back, we feel so blessed to have met in Opole and found each other. Erasmus+ truly brings people together, and we are incredibly thankful for all the experiences and memories we gained there.
