Admission Requirements

Secondary school diploma (or the matura exam) constitutes the basic admission criterion. We require English language skills at B2 level, confirmed by a certificate. Click here to find the list of the certificates.

About the Programme

If you want to be well prepared to face challenges of a highly competitive job market in an increasingly global society, study English Philology at the University of Opole and get BA degree in English. Studying English Philology, you will gain knowledge of language, literature, culture and history of English-speaking countries; practical language skills at high proficiency level of at least C1; competencies related to a specialization of your choice.

In the course of studies you will engage in teamwork to develop your abilities to cooperate with others and realize your leadership potential.

Specialities

Being a student of English Philology, you choose one of the following specialities. Each semester you have at least one speciality course belonging strictly to your field of interest. Apart from that, all students learn practical English at C1 level,  linguistics, British, Irish and American literature, history and culture.

 

English and Cultural Studies

The undergraduates of English Philology with English and Culture speciality possess deepened knowledge of socio-cultural aspects of English speaking countries and can communicate in socio-cultural settings using English at an advanced C1 level of CEFR for languages.

 

English and Spanish

The undergraduates of English Philology with English and Spanish speciality possess general knowledge of Spanish culture and can communicate in business settings using both foreign languages.

 

Translation Studies

The undergraduates of English Philology with Translation Studies speciality have general education in liberal arts. Their command of oral and written English is at C1 level of CEFR for languages. They possess deepened knowledge of translation and interpreting.

Business English

The undergraduates of English Philology with Business English speciality are well prepared to face the challenges of a highly competitive job market. They learn to use English at C1 level of CEFR for languages. They also gain general knowledge of business world in order to communicate in business settings using English.

 

English and Chinese

The undergraduates of English Philology with English and Chinese speciality are educated in liberal arts as well as gain knowledge of the literature, culture and general linguistics of English at C1 level of CEFR for languages. The university courses in Chinese language and culture guide students to their command of Chinese at A2 level.

 

English and Dutch

Undergraduates of English Philology with English and Dutch speciality have general education in liberal arts, including general linguistic education. Their command of oral and written English is at C1 level of CEFR for languages while their command of Dutch is at B2 level. They possess general knowledge of Dutch culture and can communicate in business settings using both foreign languages.

 

Business English in Manufacturing Company

English Philology with Business English in a manufacturing company speciality follows the practical profile of the undergraduate studies. Opole University in cooperation with Nutricia company have created an innovative programme that allows the undergraduates to link their academic growth with practical application of knowledge and skills. Students learn how to function in an international manufacturing company by developing their skills in analysis, planning, engineering, economics, or IT. They learn to use English in speech and writing at C1 level of CEFR for languages. The programme comprises several business subjects, such as business negotiations, international commerce and trade law to name a few (full information on the study programme is available at www.ifa.uni.opole.pl in the ECTS folder).

 

Medical English

The specialisation is aimed at students who want to relate their future career with medicine or pharmaceutical professions and wish to enchance their medical vocabulary and idioms. Their command of oral and written English is at C1 level of CEFR for languages. The undergraduates of English Philology with Medical English may seek employment in the medical and pharmaceutical facilities.

 

The Structure of the Programme

Apart from general English subjects meant to develop the students’ practical language skills, most semesters consist of a course in linguistics starting with Introduction to Linguistics, through Phonology, Morphology, Syntax and Semantics, and Pragmatics –
a course in literature and at least one speciality subject. Additionally, the students are taught about learning strategies, history of the USA and Great Britain, as well as  they exercise their debating and public speaking skills. The last two semesters of the programme are largely comprised of the undergraduate seminar courses whose purpose is to lead you through the process of writing your bachelor’s thesis. As a result of the three-year-long study of English Philology, apart from earning a Bachelor of Arts degree, you will become a highly trained professional communicator. As English is the language of instruction, high levels of proficiency in English are expected to be achieved. A variety of practice-oriented courses fosters such skills as adaptability, creativity, criticality and collaboration in group settings. Depending on the specialty and courses of your choice, you can become suited to perform various jobs in different fields.
