Biological Chemistry – Bachelor’s Programme

Biological Chemistry is one of the study programmes in English offered at the Faculty of Chemistry that was established in 2008 on the basis of Institute of Chemistry, which possessed over a forty year tradition in chemical education and research. Now Faculty of Chemistry is located in one of the most recently renovated buildings of our University. The 3-year BA program, built on the border of chemistry and biology, is designed to prepare students to enter a variety of interdisciplinary activities in biochemical, biotechnological, biopharmaceutical, environmental and food sciences. Students in this program are given the opportunity to study chemical processes in living organisms, interactions between organisms and between organisms and their environment. Special attribute is the knowledge on the ways of interfering into these processes: rational designing, production and mechanisms of action of drugs, pesticides and preservatives, as well as ecological safety of the use of chemicals. Our graduates are equipped with all the required knowledge and skills to work at chemical laboratories, analytical laboratories for agriculture and environmental protection facilities, at pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies, as well as at respective administrative institutions dealing with the above-mentioned fields. We are proud that education in Biological Chemistry sugests limitless areas of employment and future activity of graduates.

Study Chemistry at UO

Our faculty enjoys recognition in the academic community both in Poland and abroad. Our faculty members work in EU expert teams that evaluate research projects conducted in Europe, receive many grants, fulfill functions in scientific communities and editorial committees of national and international journals.

Our strength is the ability to conduct researches, including international ones, in the laboratories equipped with the newest instruments. As a result, our faculty staff and students publish their high-quality articles in a number of prestigious journals and get invitations to participate in conferences and lectures.

Our faculty is open to students and lecturers from abroad. Moreover, students have an opportunity to study on numerous exchange programmes at our partner universities in Poland and in many other EU and non-EU countries in the framework of MOST and Erasmus+ projects.

The Structure of the Programme

In semester 1 students get to know the basic notions and terminology of chemistry introduced to them during General Chemistry classes held in the form of lectures, workshops and laboratory practicals.

During semester 2, you will learn Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Applied Chemistry and Management of Chemicals, General and Systematic Botany, Chemical Basis of the Life Processes, Mathematics. Starting with the second semester, along with the compulsory courses, students can choose from a variety of selective courses from other fields of knowledge.

Semester 3 will be dedicated to such courses as Physical Chemistry, Basic Theoretical and Quantum Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Animal and Plant Physiology and Microbiology.

In semester 4, besides having such study areas as Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry and Basic Biology, and Ecological Chemistry, students have additional classes of a foreign language and start to get familiar with the main aspects of a research project. Moreover, in July-September during Practical Training they can apply the theoretical knowledge and skills obtained during the foregoing semesters.

During the last year (5-6 semesters) of BA studies students keep on developing their proficiency in such subjects as Chemical Technology, Inorganic Chemistry, Chemistry of Materials, Crystal Chemistry, Basic Biotechnology and others, finish their research projects, prepare their BA theses and get ready for the defence. The full programme of the study can be found here

The Most Important Courses

Ecological chemistry

During this course we will teach you to understand, define and explain the relationships occurring in nature as well as determine their dependence on changes caused by human activity. It is highly important for our students to acquire the skill to plan the production processes so that the relationships were not interrupted. And we are determined to provide you with such competences together with a capability to analyse the impact of changing environmental factors on ecosystem.

During the course of microbiology students will get familiar with the fundamentals of construction, functioning, and significance of microorganisms in the natural and human environments. Due to having both lectures and laboratory practicals, students will get equipped with theoretical knowledge – will be able to describe morphological construction and physiological processes of the fundamental groups of microorganisms, together with the opportunity to apply it in practice, using the basic laboratorial methods and techniques appropriate for microbiological diagnostics.

Inorganic chemistry

The main aim of the course of to provide students with basic knowledge about the properties of elements of the block s and p of the periodic system (atomic and physical properties, reactivity, occurrence, the most important compounds and use). Workshops, that are held together with lectures, help understand and practice the issues covered by the curriculum by solving problematic tasks.

Chemical basis of the life processes

In this course students will learn the construction of sub-cellular structures and live organism cells. After the completion of the course, students will know, among others, the basic properties of biologically important molecules, the basic chemical processes connected to metabolic activity taking place in the living organisms’ cells. Moreover, they will be able to explain the impact of certain chemical compounds on metabolic changes and organisms’ behaviour.

Advantages of Biological Chemistry

State-of-the-art equipment

We are incredibly proud of our advanced equipment, which is available to our entire staff and students alike. We are aware that reliable research results and experiments depend on the newest technology available, and we provide them with gas and liquid chromatographs featuring various types of detectors, capillary electrophoresis instruments, NMR, FTIR, NIR, UVVis, Mass spectrometers, Xenotest, and others.

English as a communication tool

The Bachelor’s degree programme Biological Chemistry provides education in a world language – English, which constitutes an essential communication tool, both in multinational companies as well as international research teams. Our faculty acknowledges the importance of English for the needs of a modern scientist that is why all the literature used is primarily in this language. We regularly invite foreign lecturers and teachers to to visit us and encourage our students to participate in a variety of exchange programmes, international conferences and research projects.

Personal treatment

One of the advantages of the study programme is a limited number of students invited yearly for studying at our faculty as well as well-equipped, modern laboratories, which provides all students with an opportunity to conduct respective experiments under careful supervision of experienced scientists.

Training on-site

One of our primary tasks is to encourage graduates to get envolved in the scientific activity, that is why Faculty of Chemistry offers volunteer positions to all students, who are more deeply interested in
real scientific research, in the frame of the projects conducted.

Work Opportunities and a Further Education Option

Prospective jobs, sectors and skills

Our graduates are equipped with all the required knowledge and skills to work at administrative institutions, chemical laboratories, analytical laboratories for agriculture and environmental protection facilities, pharmaceutical companies, etc. They can also take up jobs in the laboratories of chemical plants, research and development institutions, environmental protection and material study facilities. Our graduates work in such institutions both in Poland and in other EU countries.

MA in Chemistry, Biotechnology or Environmental Protection

The graduates of the Biological Chemistry Bachelor’s Programme at the University of Opole can further their education at any university that offers a MA programme in Chemistry, Biotechnology, Environmental Protection thanks to the interdisciplinary approach of the programme.

Erasmus Programme

Erasmus+ Study Mobility

The Erasmus programme is a project of the European Commission. It aims for an exchange of experiences between countries, universities, their students and staff. The goals of the programme are to assist in cooperation between higher education institutions in different countries, to increase the students competence, and develop their language and intercultural communication skills. We provide you with an opportunity to spend up to the half of the programme (a whole year) at one of our partner universities in Europe – with Erasmus+ scholarships available to the vast majority of students.

Erasmus+ Training Mobility

Students of any nationality studying at a higher education institution in European Union can apply for an Erasmus mobility and be granted a monthly scholarship ranging between 300 and 700 euros. Travel costs are reimbursed as well. We strongly advise you to use scholarships also for your internships – we will provide you with our contacts around Europe so that you can spend your summer holiday or even, thanks to rescheduling your semester – part of the academic year, getting some extra experience. The training scholarships are also available to you for up to 12 months after your graduation.
