Institute of German Philology


Since the very beginning the  Institute of German Philology has taken special care to improve the quality of teaching through adjusting its offer to the dynamically changing labour market. Undertaking the studies at the IGP the candidate can be certain of gaining the comprehensive education in the field of linguistics, literature and culture. The Institute organises international conferences and workshops, student and staff exchanges and it participates in international projects.

Research

Members of the Institute conduct wide research in the fields of literature, linguistics and culture. This versatility of the research is particularly visible in the studies of Silesia: history of language, literature and German culture in Silesia, national and ethnical minorities from the perspective of intercultural relations in modern Europe. Such topics as linguistic analysis of identity discourse, the role of the language in the process of shaping social identity, contrastive analysis of a compliment, bilingualism, contrastive translation studies and cognitive approach and phraseology of chosen registers of the language are also the focus of research conducted nationally and internationally. Our Institute cooperates with research institutions in Freiburg, Wurzburg, Poitiers, Veszprem, Gdańsk, Poznań and Łódź.

Study programmes

The Institute has always built its name as modern dynamic academic unit rooted in classical model of modern philology. This dual approach guarantees comprehensive education of high quality, which is gained on all levels of our studies. The possibility of choosing one’s own path of development based on an individual interests and labour market demands is ensured by a great number of programmes offered by the Institute: translation studies, German with English (teaching specialisation), German in Law and Economics and German Philology with Dutch.

Future careers:

The number of job offers for our graduate is systematically increasing, clearly indicating that the demand for people who not only speak foreign languages fluently but also possess competence in literature, culture and institutions is on the rise. The fact that both private and public employers look for our graduates shows how much they appreciate our Institute.

The dual approach which combines the traditional good practice of modern philology and modernity of the dynamic labour market seems to be quite effective judging from excellent opinions our graduates receive from employers from the following sectors: translation, education, social communication, services and transport.
