Faculty of Chemistry

The Faculty of Chemistry was established in 2008 as a continuation of chemistry studies conducted at our Alma Mater since 1964. In the years 2009-2011 thanks to the European funding the Faculty building was completely refurbished and its laboratories gained new equipment providing students and scientists with new comfortable interiors for studying and state of the art facilities for conducting research.

The Faculty has recently obtained the A category from the Polish Accreditation Committee and has the power to confer doctoral and post-doctoral degrees in chemistry. The Faculty conducts research in cooperation with foreign scientific institutions from Sweden, Austria, Italy, Spain, Russia, Japan, Ukraine, Belorussia, Czech Republic, and Slovakia. The fields of studies offered in the Faculty include inorganic, analytical, physical, theoretical, organic, ecological chemistry and chemical technology. Students can participate in placements in Poland and abroad. They have at their disposal highly specialist laboratories for spectroscopy (NMR; FTIR; UV-VIS), thermic analysis (TGA-DSC), X-ray diffractometry (KUMA and Xcalibur with a CCD camera), gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS), liquid chromatography (Beckami System Gold i Varian Polaris), capillary electrophoresis (Beckman P/ACE 5000), high-temperature gel permeation chromatography (Waters Alliance GPCV 2000), and polymer analysis (XENOTEST Alpha LM High Energy).

Fields of research:

Chemistry and technology of polyolefins encompassing polymers synthesis and studying their properties, modifying polyolefins in order to give them wanted properties including examining thermo- and photo-degradation of polymers and their atmospheric aging.

X-ray structural examination of organic and metalorganic complexes and studying mechanisms of phase changes and relations between the structure and properties of the examined complexes.

Transitory metals complexes and especially complexes of phthalocyanines and porphyrins with d and f metals as biologically active substances.

Analytical and ecological chemistry with a special focus on the secretion of natural substances, search for new plant growth regulators and determination of xenobiotics in bodily fluids, food and environmental samples.

Offered programmes:

Chemistry is an ordered study programme, i.e. it receives special scholarship funding from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. Since 2009 the Faculty has been conducting a project co-financed by the European Social Fund Increasing the attractiveness of chemistry studies at the University of Opole.

Future careers:

Graduates possess an established knowledge of general chemistry and thorough knowledge of a particular field of chemistry and are able to solve scientific issues. They know how to apply instrumental methods in analytic laboratories. They are also expected to be able to discuss chemical subjects both with specialists and non-specialists and to participate actively in team work. They are prepared for work in chemical industry, chemical laboratories, analytic laboratories that support agriculture, industry and environmental protection. They are trained to apply the rules of life-long education and to take up the third level of studies. Our best students have a chance to study abroad for one or two semesters at one of the universities with which we have signed agreements: Lund, Vienna, Girona, Dijon, Ferrara, Lecce, Sint-Lieven and Mainz.
