Registration of residence

PESEL

A PESEL number is an 11-digit personal identification number used in Poland. Not every student is required to have it. You need this if you register your temporary residence (meldunek/zameldowanie) and sometimes it is needed when opening a polish bank account. To get your PESEL number visit Centrum Usług Publicznych on 1 Colonel Witold Pilecki Street, 45-331 Opole, take the ticket from the machine, find the service desk (often indicated by the letter at the beginning of your number from ticket), and wait till your number will be displayed/called. To get the PESEL number take your passport and accommodation confirmation issued by dormitory administration (if you stay in dormitory). You will receive your PESEL number immediately.

While getting your PESEL number you can also ask to register your residence (meldunek/zameldowanie). To do this, do not take another ticket. Instead, after you will receive your PESEL ask the administrative staff at the desk if they can also register you in the system. Registration will be done immediately.

The Trusted Profile is a free tool that enables you to verify your identity online and carry out a range of administrative matters via the internet. Among other things, it allows you to log in to selected public administration services, submit and sign electronic applications, and access services connected with taxation, the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) and healthcare.

For international students, the Trusted Profile can be particularly useful when dealing with administrative matters in Poland, including certain formalities relating to their residence. In some electronic procedures concerning foreign nationals, the Trusted Profile is one of the available methods of verifying identity.

The Trusted Profile is not a residence permit and does not replace a visa, residence card or any other document confirming the legality of your stay in Poland.

How do you set up a Trusted Profile?
  1. Go to the official Trusted Profile website – gov.pl.
  2. Select the option ‘Set up a Trusted Profile’ (Załóż profil Zaufany).
  3. Choose an available method to verify your identity and follow the instructions.
  4. Once your identity has been successfully verified, you can use the Trusted Profile to log in to available public services.

Important: The Trusted Profile is free of charge. When using the service, you must only use official public administration websites and must not share your password or authorisation codes with anyone else.
