Gender issues in Eastern European countries

The course provides an overview of the perception of feminism and gender issues in East Europe in the decades between 1945-1989. The course is specifically structured to meet five specific learning outcomes:

  1. critically analyze socio-historical context associated with development of gender issues in postwar period in Eastern Europe,
  2. demonstrate knowledge of key concepts related to democratic transition in post-communist states and assess this transition in terms of feminist questions,
  3. articulate a clear understanding of the multi-contextual relations between nation, nationalism and gender,
  4. critically assess the perception of the role of women and citizenship across cultures and political systems,
  5. develop comparative skills allowing to refer the discussed issues to various historical and political backgrounds.
  • evaluation: Students’ attendance, activity during the classes (participation in discussion), written assignment (semestral paper).
