Applied Gender Studies – Master’s Programme

Gender inequalities still belong to the most pressing issues across societies. We are using this category as a lens to look at the contemporary human world to try to understand the nowadays’ crises and complicated interrelations between people, machines, networks, cultures or artifacts. Our programme is a gender themed applied sociology which apart from theoretical knowledge, provides the students with actual sociological research competences as well as with problem solving and critical thinking skills, at the same time developing their language proficiency.

Study in English in Poland

We have designed a special master’s programme (MA) in Applied Gender Studies to meet the following needs:

  • We teach it in English, providing you with an opportunity to improve this fundamental skill of the 21st century.
  • We are located in the very centre of Europe, in a region that on the surface looks homogeneous, but in fact it is in the heart of all processes and complexities of emigration, multinational families and ethnic minorities.
  • As sociologists, we are ones who merge the humanistic with the analytical. We provide you with an empathic approach to diverse phenomena and especially to the culture of the other: be it different nationalities, ethnicities, religions, classes, genders, and organizational cultures. It is combined with a systematic, analytical, quantitative or qualitative evidence based approach.
  • We focus on the research skills, including specialist software (SPSS, Atlas.ti) as well as evaluation research, so that our students are equipped with powerful tools to use in practice the theoretical knowledge we provide.
  • We have teamed up with business entities and non-governmental and governmental bodies to make your studies even more practical and to provide you with case studies for your final research projects.

The Structure of the Programme

The MA programme is based in the Faculty of Philology at the Institute of English. The linguistic and humanistic expertise is supported by the social science approach of the Institute of Sociology. The complementary structure allows for the interdisciplinary and multilevel approach to the gender related issues of language, communication, culture, society, identity, etc.

Since the very nature of the topic is performative or is communicated visually, the artists contribute to the course as well. Both theoretical and practical classes in the visual culture are provided by the Institute of Art of the University of Opole. Several classes are to be carried out by experts outside of academia for more practical and applied perspective. These include the local but recognized in Europe theatre, regional governing bodies or transnational corporate business that in turn act also as training venues or case studies for the students.

The 2 years’ programme is carried out in Opole, Poland for 3 semesters, in Thessaloniki, Grecce for another semester (optionally), and there is a 2 months’ long internship organized in the area of Trier, Germany if chosen. This will create miscellaneous opportunities for new experiences to the students travelling across Europe from the East to the West and beyond.

My friends who had already been to Opole told me everything was good in here: people, life, friendships and especially teachers. I chose this place to study the Intercultural Communication MA programme. After I came to Opole, I understood I would learn many things here. I am sure that by the time I graduate from the University of Opole I will have learnt lots of things and I will have great opportunities for my future life.

Introduction to gender and culture

The course is a practical introduction to culture as an object of academic study. It looks at the interdisciplinarity of Cultural Studies and the evolution of research orientations. It shows how cultural forms and practices can be analysed, evaluated and explained in the context of various theoretical models (e.g., psychological, sociological, anthropological).

Gender and society

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the various forms gender determines and is determined by other factors in differentiated dimensions of social life. Gender is thought here as one of the crucial indicators of a person’s position within social structure which is intertwined with other indicators, like class, ethnicity and race, often in very subtle ways.

Gender and visual arts

In the times of instagrams, tumblers or snapchats we want to explore the creative processes behind the social construction of gender as well as engage in creation as well.

Gender and ethnicity

The course introduces the theory of representations of ethnicity and gender in literature and in the contemporary media. During the course the concepts of ethnicity, race, gender, racism and hegemony will be discussed. It will be concerned with the ideas of national identities, switching cultural codes, assimilation strategies, as well as with the ambiguities of representation and subordination.

Advantages of Applied Gender Studies

If you are looking to work in sectors spanning from public administration to advertizing – you will get the necessary knowledge and training with us.
